Overview

Mount Kailash—the Stairway to Heaven—is the most intriguing mountain range is the whole of Himalayas, so we thought of divulging some things that you might not know about it. As a matter of fact, Mount Kailash is 22,000 ft. from the Tibetan Plateau, which is largely considered to be inaccessible. For Hindus and Buddhists, Mount Kailash is the physical embodiment of Mount Meru. Mount Kailash is believed to be the Axis Mundi aka the cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, centre of the world, the world tree. It is the point where heaven meets earth. The Google Maps vouch for the validity of this fact.

One description of Kailash states that each face is made of something different. The east face is said to be made of crystal and is associated with the Brahmaputra River. The west face is said to be made of ruby and is associated with the Sutlej River. The south face is said to be made of lapis lazuli and is associated with the Karnali River. The stunning north face of Kailash is said to be made of gold and is associated with the Indus River.

According to the Buddhist and Hindu scriptures, around the Mount Meru exist ancient monasteries and caves wherein the holy sages reside in their material and subtle bodies. These caves can be seen by only a few fortunate ones. Two beautiful lakes, namely Mansarovar and Rakshas Tal, are located at the base of Mount Kailash. Of the two, Mansarovar, which lies at an altitude of 14, 950 ft., is considered the highest freshwater body in the world.

Itinerary
Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,345m)

Kathmandu
+

Your journey begins at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Upon exiting the terminal, you will be greeted by our airport representative holding an agency signboard. You will be transferred to your hotel in a private tourist vehicle, a drive that typically takes 30 to 45 minutes (approx. 6 km) depending on local traffic. After checking in, you will be served a traditional welcome drink. In the late afternoon, a comprehensive tour briefing will be held to discuss the logistics of the Tibet entry, gear requirements, and the spiritual significance of the Kailash Kora. This is also the time to ensure all travel permits are in order. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner, providing a taste of authentic Nepali cuisine. Overnight at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2

Kathmandu Sightseeing

Kathmandu
+

Today is dedicated to exploring the spiritual landmarks of the Kathmandu Valley, covering roughly 25 km in total travel. The morning begins with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, the most sacred Hindu shrine in Nepal, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. Next, you will visit Budhanilkantha (Jal Narayan), featuring a magnificent reclining stone statue of Lord Vishnu floating in a cosmic pond. After lunch, the tour proceeds to Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), a hilltop sanctuary offering panoramic views of the city and a blend of Hindu and Buddhist iconography. The final stop is Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing ancient Malla architecture. You will return to your hotel for dinner and final packing for the flight to Tibet.

Day 3

Fly Kathmandu to Lhasa (3,650m)

Lhasa
+

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for one of the world's most scenic flights. The trans-Himalayan flight to Lhasa takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, offering spectacular views of Mt. Everest and the Himalayan range. Upon arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, you will meet your Tibetan guide and drive 60 km (approx. 1 hour) to Lhasa city. As you have ascended to 3,650 meters, the remainder of the day is strictly for acclimatization. It is essential to rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activity to allow your body to adjust to the thin air. Dinner will be served at the hotel. Overnight in Lhasa

Day 4

Lhasa City Tour

Lhasa
+

Today focuses on the cultural heart of Tibet. The morning begins with an outside visit to the Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama and an architectural marvel of the world. While we admire its towering red and white walls from the square, the history of the plateau feels palpable. Next, we visit the Jokhang Temple, the most sacred temple in Tibet, which houses the Jowo Shakyamuni statue. Surrounding the temple is Barkhor Street, a vibrant circular pilgrimage path where you can join locals in their daily "Kora," spinning prayer wheels and browsing traditional Tibetan handicrafts. The total walking distance is roughly 4–5 km. Overnight in Lhasa.

Day 5

Drive Lhasa to Shigatse (3,900m)

Shigatse
+

We depart Lhasa early for a 360 km drive to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. The journey takes about 6 to 7 hours via the new highway, which offers views of the rugged Tibetan landscape and the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Upon arrival, we visit the magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447. This monastery is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and houses the world's largest gold-gilded bronze statue of the Maitreya Buddha (Future Buddha), standing at 26 meters. The intricate murals and the sheer scale of the prayer halls are awe-inspiring. After the tour, we check into the hotel for dinner and rest. Overnight in Shigatse.

Day 6

Drive Shigatse to Saga (4,500m)

Saga
+

The journey continues westward toward the remote regions of Tibet. Today’s drive covers 340 km and takes approximately 7 to 8 hours. As we traverse the high-altitude plateau, we cross the Gurung-La Pass (5,050m), which offers a stunning "grand view" of the surrounding peaks, including the massive Mt. Shishapangma (8,021m) and Gauri Shankar. The landscape becomes more nomadic, with sightings of yak herds and vast grasslands. We eventually reach the small town of Saga (also known as Sanga), situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. This is a critical point for acclimatization as we move into higher elevations. Overnight at a lodge in Saga.

Day 7

Drive Saga to Lake Mansarovar (4,500m)

Lake Mansarova
+

This is an auspicious day as we head toward the holy lake. The drive covers 385 km and takes about 8 to 9 hours. The highlight of the day occurs at Horchu Pass, where you will catch your first glimpse of the shimmering blue waters of Lake Mansarovar and the distant, majestic peak of Mount Kailash. Reaching the shores of Lake Mansarovar is a deeply emotional and spiritual milestone for many pilgrims. The lake, believed to have been created in the mind of Lord Brahma, is said to cleanse one's sins. You will check into a guest house near the lake for dinner. Overnight at Mansarovar.

Day 8

Lake Mansarovar to Darchen (4,560m)

Darchen
+

The morning is dedicated to spiritual activities at the lakeside. Pilgrims can engage in Puja, Havana, meditation, and a holy dip in the cold, sacred waters of Mansarovar. The spiritual energy of the lake, coupled with the backdrop of Mt. Kailash, provides a once-in-a-lifetime sense of achievement. After lunch, we take a short 30 km drive (approx. 1 hour) to Darchen, the base camp for the Kailash Kora. Darchen is a small settlement that serves as the starting and ending point for the trek. You will spend the afternoon preparing your day packs and resting for the strenuous journey ahead. Overnight in Darchen.

Day 9

Kora Begins: Darchen to Diraphuk (4,890m)

Diraphuk
+

The sacred "Parikarma" or circuit begins today. We drive the first 10 km to Tarboche (Yama Dwar), the gateway to the Kora. From here, the trek begins. You will walk for approximately 4 to 5 hours over a distance of 12 km to reach Diraphuk. The trail follows the Lha-chu river, and as you walk, the North Face of Mt. Kailash gradually reveals itself in all its glory. The vertical cliffs of the mountain seem almost within reach. The trek is moderate but requires steady breathing due to the altitude. Upon arrival at Diraphuk, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the sun hitting the golden peak of Kailash. Overnight at a guest house.

Day 10

Trek Diraphuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass (5,600m)

Zuthulphuk
+

This is the most challenging and spiritual day of the entire journey. We begin the 22 km trek, which takes 8 to 10 hours. The most difficult section is the steep ascent to the Dolma La Pass (5,600m), the highest point of the trip. The pass is covered in prayer flags, and pilgrims offer prayers and leave behind mementos. After crossing the pass, we descend toward the turquoise Gauri Kunda (Lake of Compassion). The path then levels out as we trek through the valley toward Zuthulphuk, home to the miracle cave of Milarepa. This day tests your physical and mental endurance, but the sense of completion is unparalleled. Overnight at a guest house in Zuthulphuk.

Day 11

Zuthulphuk to Saga via Mansarovar

Saga
+

On the final day of the Kora, we trek for approximately 8 km (3 hours) on flat terrain to reach the point where our vehicles are waiting. This marks the end of the sacred circuit. After a celebratory lunch in Darchen, we begin the long drive back to Saga via Horchu. The drive covers roughly 350 km and takes about 7 hours. As you leave the Kailash region, you can reflect on the spiritual journey you have just completed. The familiar landscapes of the Tibetan plateau pass by as we return to the lower (but still high) altitude of Saga. Overnight at a lodge in Saga.

Day 12

Drive Saga to Shigatse (3,900m)

Shigatse
+

After breakfast, we begin the return journey across the plateau to Shigatse. This 340 km drive takes about 7 to 8 hours. The road offers another chance to see the majestic Himalayan peaks from a different perspective. This day is largely dedicated to travel, allowing your body to start descending from the extreme altitudes of the Kailash region. Upon arrival in Shigatse, you can enjoy a hot shower and the relative comforts of a city hotel. It is a good time to rest and perhaps explore the local markets for any final Tibetan souvenirs. Overnight in Shigatse.

Day 13

Drive Shigatse back to Lhasa

Lhasa
+

Today we cover the final leg of the Tibetan road journey, driving 360 km back to Lhasa. The drive takes roughly 6 hours via the new highway. Arriving back in the "Sunlight City," you will feel a sense of homecoming. The evening is free for you to revisit Barkhor Street or enjoy a final Tibetan dinner with your group and guide. It is a time for celebration and reflection on the incredible journey from the valley of Kathmandu to the heights of Dolma La. Overnight at a hotel in Lhasa.

Day 14

Fly Lhasa back to Kathmandu

Kathmandu
+

fter breakfast, you will be transferred to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your return flight to Kathmandu. The 1 hour and 15-minute flight once again provides a final aerial farewell to the Himalayas. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is free for "last-minute" shopping in Thamel or visiting any sites you may have missed. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner to celebrate the successful completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 15

Final Departure

Kathmandu
+

Your Himalayan adventure concludes today. After breakfast, you can spend your final hours soaking in the atmosphere of Kathmandu. Approximately 3 hours before your flight, our airport representative will provide a transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure. As you head to the terminal, you carry with you the "sweet memories" of the sacred peaks, the holy lakes, and the resilient spirit of the people of Nepal and Tibet. The tour ends, but the spiritual impact of the Yatra remains. Safe travels!
