Itinerary
Day 1

Arrival in Paro – The Gateway to the Dragon Kingdom

Paro
+

Your journey begins with a breathtaking flight over the Himalayas, landing at Paro International Airport, where the crisp mountain air immediately signals your arrival in a different world. Upon completing airport formalities, your Nepal Trip Advisors representative will greet you in traditional Bhutanese style. We begin our exploration at Ta Dzong, the former watchtower now serving as the National Museum. This structure houses an incredible collection of Bhutanese art, relics, and religious thangkas, providing a perfect introduction to the country's history.

Just a short walk downhill brings us to Rinpung Dzong, a fortress built in 1645 that stands as a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. Its massive buttressed walls dominate the valley, and the courtyard features intricate woodwork that showcases the skill of ancient craftsmen. This dzong is not just a relic; it remains a vibrant center of administrative and religious life. As the sun sets, we invite you to stroll through Paro's main street, where small handicraft shops and cozy cafes offer a first taste of local life. The evening is yours to settle in and soak up the serene atmosphere of the valley.

Day 2

Paro to Punakha – Over the Dochu-La Pass

Punakha
+

After a hearty breakfast, we depart for Punakha, a journey that takes us across the legendary Dochu-La Pass (3,088m). On a clear day, the pass offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The 108 memorial chortens built here create a poignant atmosphere amidst the fluttering prayer flags. Descending into the sub-tropical Punakha valley, we take a gentle walk through rice paddies to reach Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the "Temple of Fertility." Dedicated to the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley, the temple is adorned with eccentric paintings and has a fascinating history of unconventional spiritual teachings.

In the afternoon, we visit the crown jewel of Bhutanese architecture: Punakha Dzong. Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu (Male) and Mo Chu (Female) rivers, this majestic fortress is especially stunning when the surrounding jacaranda trees are in bloom. We will explore its grand assembly halls and the "hundred-pillar" hall. To end the day, we’ll walk across one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, draped in colorful prayer flags, offering a thrilling view of the rushing river below. The evening in Punakha is peaceful, allowing for reflection on the day's spiritual and architectural wonders.

Day 3

Punakha to Bumthang – Journey to the Spiritual Heart

Bumthang
+

Today is a scenic drive deep into the central highlands. We climb steadily toward Pele La Pass (3,300m), the traditional boundary between western and eastern Bhutan. The landscape changes from lush forests to high-altitude meadows dotted with yaks. Our destination is Bumthang, a region composed of four valleys—Chumey, Choekhor, Tang, and Ura—collectively considered the spiritual heartland of the nation. Upon arrival in the Chumey valley, we head directly to the Nimalung Lhakhang to witness the Nimalung Festival.

This is the highlight of our trip. The festival is a vibrant explosion of color, sound, and devotion. You will see locals dressed in their finest ghos and kiras, gathered to witness sacred mask dances (Cham). These dances are believed to invoke blessings and drive away evil spirits. The rhythmic beat of drums and the chanting of monks create a hypnotic environment. Being part of this local gathering allows you to see the "Gross National Happiness" philosophy in action—a community united by faith and tradition. We will spend the late afternoon immersed in the festivities before retiring to our lodge in Bumthang.

Day 4

Exploring the Sacred Valleys of Bumthang

Bumthang
+

We dedicate today to the "Choekhor" valley, home to Bhutan's most ancient and revered sites. We begin at Jambay Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples built across the Himalayas to pin down an ogress and spread Buddhism. A short distance away lies Kurje Lhakhang, an enormous complex where the three main temples are built against a rock face containing the body print of Guru Rinpoche. The spiritual energy here is palpable as pilgrims circumambulate the chortens.

After a local lunch, we cross the Chamkhar River to visit Tamshing Lhakhang. Founded in 1501 by the treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa, this temple contains some of the oldest wall paintings in Bhutan, depicting the life of the Guru. Our final stop for the day is Jakar Dzong, the "Castle of the White Bird," which sits perched on a ridge overlooking the town. Unlike other dzongs, Jakar is uniquely positioned and offers sweeping views of the valley. For those interested in local crafts, a visit to the Swiss Farm or a local brewery in the evening offers a unique look at Bumthang's small-scale industries.

Day 5

Bumthang to Phobjikha – The Glacial Valley

Phobjikha
+

Leaving the spiritual heights of Bumthang, we retrace our steps toward the western districts, stopping at the formidable Trongsa Dzong. This is the largest fortress in Bhutan and was the seat of power for the Wangchuck dynasty before they became kings. The dzong’s architecture is a maze of corridors, courtyards, and temples clinging to a mountain spur. We will also visit the Ta Dzong (Watchtower) Museum, which houses artifacts related to the monarchy. Afterward, we continue to the hidden Phobjikha Valley, a wide, U-shaped glacial valley of breathtaking beauty.

This valley is famous for being the winter home of the rare and endangered Black-Necked Cranes. Upon arrival, we stretch our legs on the Gangtey Nature Trail. This 1.5-hour walk begins at the mani wall near the monastery and winds through a blue pine forest and bamboo groves, ending at the valley floor. It is a peaceful hike, offering ample opportunities for bird watching and photography. The valley remains untouched by modern infrastructure like overhead power lines to protect the cranes, making it feel like a step back in time. We will spend the night in a local guesthouse, enjoying the quietude of the Phobjikha night.

Day 6

Phobjikha to Thimphu – Into the Modern Capital

Thimphu
+

Before departing Phobjikha, we visit the Gangtey Goemba, a 17th-century monastery that commands a view of the entire valley. As the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan, it holds significant religious importance. We also stop at the Black-Necked Crane Information Center to learn about the conservation efforts being made to protect these sacred "birds of heaven." From here, we drive back across the Dochu-La Pass, descending toward the capital city, Thimphu.

Thimphu is a unique blend of modern development and ancient tradition, famously being the only world capital without traffic lights. Upon arrival, you will have the evening free to explore the city center. You can visit the Norzin Lam, Thimphu’s main street, or find a local bookstore or craft shop. The contrast between the rural valleys of Bumthang and the bustling streets of Thimphu is striking, yet the capital maintains its cultural soul. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant where you can try the national dish, Ema Datshi (chili and cheese).

Day 7

Discovering Thimphu’s Cultural Treasures

Thimphu
+

Our full day in Thimphu begins at Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang), where one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world gazes over the valley. The panoramic views from here are exceptional. Next, we visit the Takin Preservation Center to see Bhutan’s national animal—a creature that looks like a cross between a cow and a goat. Legend has it that the Divine Madman created it after a large lunch! We then proceed to the Zilukha Nunnery, where you can meet the nuns and observe their daily rituals.

In the afternoon, we immerse ourselves in local life at the Centenary Farmers’ Market. This is where the colors and smells of Bhutan come alive, with stalls selling everything from dried chilies and wild honey to ritual artifacts. Nearby, the Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Street offers a chance to buy genuine souvenirs directly from the artisans. We wrap up the day with a visit to Tashichho Dzong, the "Fortress of the Glorious Religion." This impressive structure houses the throne room of the King and serves as the summer residence of the Chief Abbot. As night falls, the dzong is beautifully illuminated, providing a spectacular end to our Thimphu exploration.

Day 8

Thimphu to Paro – The Ultimate Pilgrimage to Tiger’s Nest

Paro
+

We return to Paro for the grand finale of our tour: the hike to Taktsang Lhakhang, or Tiger’s Nest Monastery. This is the most iconic site in Bhutan, clinging to a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. The hike takes about 4 to 5 hours round trip, winding through forests of oak and pine draped with Spanish moss. We’ll stop at a cafeteria halfway up for a rest and a stunning view of the monastery. Reaching the temple is a spiritual accomplishment; the view of the valley below and the incense-filled chambers within the monastery are unforgettable.

In the afternoon, to celebrate the completion of our trek, we will visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse. Here, you can interact with a local family and gain insight into their daily routines. For a truly authentic experience, we highly recommend trying a traditional hot stone bath. River stones are heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub filled with water and medicinal herbs, a perfect remedy for sore muscles after the hike. Tonight, we enjoy a farewell dinner with our guide and driver, reminiscing about the incredible journey through the kingdom.

Day 9

Departure from Paro

Paro
+

After a final breakfast overlooking the Paro valley, your guide and driver will escort you to Paro International Airport. As you fly out, you'll have one last chance to glimpse the Himalayan peaks that have been your companions for the past nine days. Nepal Trip Advisors is honored to have shared the magic of the Bumthang Nimalung Festival with you. We hope you leave with a heart full of memories and a spirit touched by the peace of the Dragon Kingdom. Tashi Delek!
