Itinerary
Day 1

Arrival in Paro | Journey to the Capital

Paro
+

Your journey begins the moment your flight banks into the narrow Paro Valley, offering a thrilling introduction to the Bhutanese landscape. After clearing customs, you will be met by your Druk Asia guide and driven toward Thimphu, the kingdom’s vibrant capital. To help you acclimate to the altitude, the day is kept light but culturally rich. You will visit the National Memorial Chorten, where the air is thick with the scent of juniper incense and the sound of spinning prayer wheels.

In the afternoon, meet the Takin, Bhutan’s bizarre national animal, at the local enclosure, and explore the Textile Museum to see the intricate "Kishuthara" weaves. As evening falls, witness the majesty of Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the government and the King’s office. This massive fortress-monastery stands as a testament to Bhutanese architectural prowess, built without a single nail or blueprint. You’ll end your first day with a traditional Bhutanese dinner, perhaps sampling Ema Datshi (chili and cheese), preparing your spirit for the mountain trek ahead.

Day 2

Thimphu to Geneykha | The First Step

Geneykha
+

The transition from urban life to wilderness begins today. After a short, scenic drive from Thimphu, you reach Geynikha, the starting point of your trek. This day is designed to ease your body into the trekking rhythm. The trail ascends gently through forests of ancient oak and pine, eventually leading down to the Geynitsang Chhu river. The sound of rushing water and the sight of small, hidden waterfalls set a tranquil tone for your first night under canvas.

This 2-kilometer stretch serves as a "warm-up" for the more strenuous days to come. If you have extra energy, a short walk to the nearby villages of Zamto and Chhochhekha offers a rare glimpse into the rural life of Bhutanese highlanders. You’ll see traditional farmhouses and perhaps meet local children who are always curious to greet travelers. As the sun sets behind the ridges, your trekking cook will prepare your first campsite meal, and you will sleep in the crisp, clean air of the Himalayan foothills.

Day 3

The Climb to Gur | Deep Forest Immersion

Climb to Gur
+

Today’s trek is short in distance but significant in elevation gain. Leaving the riverbed behind, you will climb steeply through a dense canopy of oak. As you gain altitude, the vegetation shifts; the oaks give way to elegant birch trees and eventually thick bamboo groves. This is a day for slow, steady steps—acclimatization is key to enjoying the higher reaches of the Dagala Range. The path eventually levels out as you skirt the hillside, offering glimpses of the valleys below.

By midday, you reach Gur, a picturesque campsite situated at a high altitude that provides an essential rest stop for your lungs to adjust. Gur is a meadow of wildflowers and peace, sitting nearly 1,000 meters higher than Thimphu. Spend your afternoon resting, hydrating, and perhaps practicing some photography. The silence of the high forest is only broken by the occasional birdcall or the wind whistling through the bamboo. This evening is about preservation of energy, as the trail tomorrow opens up into the expansive alpine world you’ve come to see.

Day 4

Into the Land of Lakes | Labatama

Labatama
+

Prepare to be awestruck as you leave the tree line behind. Today, the trail leads you into the "Thousand Lakes" region, a high-altitude plateau characterized by rolling ridges and shimmering tarns. The path is wide and clear, winding through meadows dotted with gentians and vibrant Himalayan flora. You are now in the heart of the Dagala Range, where the scale of the landscape truly begins to feel monumental. You will pass through summer yak herder camps, where nomadic families tend to their herds in these high pastures.

Your destination is Labatama, a campsite nestled near a serene alpine lake. If you have secured a fishing permit, this is your chance to try your luck with the golden trout that inhabit these waters. Even without a rod, the late afternoon light hitting the surface of the lake and the surrounding cliffs creates a surreal, golden atmosphere. At over 4,300 meters, you are now truly in the high country, surrounded by the raw, unrefined beauty of the Bhutanese wilderness.

Day 5

The High Ridges | Kiwi Chowa

kiwi Chowa
+

Today is the crown jewel of the trek, offering two distinct paths based on your energy levels. The Lower Route is a steady, gentle trail across a 4,300m pass, favored by the pack horses. However, for those seeking the ultimate vista, the Higher Route (reaching 4,520m) is indispensable. This path leads to a panoramic viewpoint where, on a clear day, the giants of the Himalayas—Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, and Kanchenjunga—reveal themselves in a jagged white line across the horizon.

For the truly adventurous, there is an option to summit Jomo Peak (4,716m). Standing on this peak feels like being on the roof of the world. After descending from the high ridges, the trail crosses several small, picturesque valleys before reaching a cairn-topped saddle. From here, a final ascent brings you to Kiwi Chowa, a campsite situated next to a narrow, bubbling stream. As you rest your legs, the sense of accomplishment from navigating the high passes will be your greatest reward under the starry Himalayan sky.

Day 6

Talakha Gompa | Return to the Valley

Talakha Gompa
+

The final leg of your trek begins with a gentle climb to a four-way trail junction. From here, you begin the long descent back toward civilization, though the beauty doesn't fade. The trail winds through a diverse forest of fir, juniper, and rhododendron—which, if in season, paints the mountainside in shades of crimson and pink. You must keep a steady eye on your footing as the path can be rocky, but the emerging views of the Thimphu Valley far below provide constant motivation.

You will eventually emerge at Talakha Gompa, an ancient monastery with a beautifully maintained garden. The monks here live a life of profound isolation and prayer, and the view from their courtyard over the sprawling capital is one of the best in the country. After offering a prayer of thanks for your safe passage, you will walk down to the waiting vehicle for a comfortable drive back to Thimphu. After four nights in a tent, the luxury of a hot shower and a soft bed at your hotel will feel like pure bliss.

Day 7

Paro Valley | Fortresses and History

Paro
+

Today, you return to the historic Paro Valley, a region blessed with fertile terraced fields and a deep sense of history. Your first stop is the Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), the "Fortress on a Heap of Jewels." This 15th-century marvel is a center of both civil and religious life, and its massive walls have stood firm against centuries of invasions. Walking across the traditional cantilever bridge leading to the dzong is like stepping back in time.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Ta Dzong, a former watchtower that has been converted into the National Museum of Bhutan. Here, the history of the kingdom is laid bare through an incredible collection of ancient thangkas, bronze statues, and traditional weapons. The museum provides the cultural context for everything you witnessed on the trek. Spend your evening exploring the charming streets of Paro town, perhaps visiting a local handicraft shop for some handmade paper or a traditional "Gho" or "Kira" to take home.

Day 8

The Pilgrimage | Tiger’s Nest & Kyichu Lhakhang

Kyichu Lhakhang
+

No journey to Bhutan is complete without visiting Taktsang Lhakhang, or the Tiger’s Nest. This morning, you will hike to this iconic monastery, which clings to a vertical granite cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. The trail is well-maintained and winds through beautiful pine forests adorned with prayer flags. Reaching the cafeteria provides a stunning viewpoint, but continuing to the monastery itself is a spiritual experience unlike any other. You will visit the sacred caves where Guru Rinpoche meditated, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan.

After descending and sharing a final lunch with your crew, you will visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in the kingdom, dating back to the 7th century. Its quiet, ancient atmosphere is the perfect place to reflect on your 9-day adventure. To celebrate your final night, you might enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, a therapeutic ritual where river stones are heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub filled with medicinal herbs—the ultimate cure for trekking-weary muscles.

Day 9

Departure | Tashi Delek

Tashi Delek
+

Your Himalayan odyssey comes to a close this morning. After a final breakfast at your hotel, your guide and driver will accompany you to Paro International Airport. As you check in for your flight, there is usually a moment of bittersweet reflection. You arrived as a visitor, but after traversing the high passes of Dagala and standing in the shadows of ancient dzongs, you leave with a deep connection to this unique mountain kingdom.

As your plane takes off, offering one last look at the snow-capped peaks, you carry with you more than just photographs. You carry the peace of the mountain lakes, the blessings of the Tiger’s Nest, and the enduring warmth of the Bhutanese people. We wish you a safe journey home—Tashi Delek—and we hope the memories of the "Thousand Lakes" remain etched in your heart until we meet again in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
